California Mileage Tax?!

Much like a bad tax hoax that won’t go away. California’s new chief of the DMV is suggesting where to get the tax money they are losing because of newer fuel efficient vehicles and the Govenator is listening. A proposed GPS device that’s attached to the car and tracks how many miles you travel in California is causing an uproar with privacy groups and political talk shows across the state.

Yeah, but will they do it? Oregon was thinking about the idea last year and will begin a trial usage of a system designed by two engineering professors at Oregon State University. If they are thinking about it enough to pour money into it, sell your Prius now!

We have a lot of bicycle lanes here in Irvine. They are part of the “road way.” It costs money to maintain these lanes just like any other. We should tax bicycles per mile! Why not runners too! You and your fancy bi-pedal locomotion!

I’m not too worried. This is a systems integration nightmare equally double any complex transponder system. What’s to prevent me from leaving my GPS transponder hooked to a 12v battery in my garage? I can see the slashdot articles already.

A political message from planetkris.com

If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there, in those swarming disregarded masses, eighty-five percent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated.

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious. – George Orwell’s 1984

End of July = End of Route 93

route93.gifI was driving down Route 3 (The Everett Turnpike in New Hampshire) last night. There is a nice giant sign on the side of the highway in Nashua that reads: Route 93 CLOSED July 25th – 31st – SEEK ALTERNATE ROUTES. My first expression was: “Are you fucking kidding me?!”

Today, I was driving up Route 9 in Massachusetts. There is a giant billboard going East exclaiming: NASCAR Winston Cup Races at New Hampsire International Speedway July 28th – 30th. “Awesome.”

For those who have never driven in New England, done the commute into Boston from New Hampsire, or seen Exit 1 in NH on a “Winston Cup” weekend: You can forget going anywhere around here that weekend, just forget about it.

Now to add insult to injury. Our republican controlled goverment has announced that: “Credible reporting now indicates that Al-Qaeda is moving forward with its plans to carry out large scale attacks in the United States in an effort to disrupt our Democratic process.” But guess what? By closing down 93 and going to fruity colored alert, we HAVE disrupted our Democratic process!

Terrorism wins. Thanks Homeland security…
